RISK: Kenya to build biggest wind farm on the continent

Turbines will be powered by a low-level jet stream from the Indian Ocean

Kenya has begun building what will be Africa’s biggest wind power farm near Laisamis, 550 km north of Nairobi.

The wind farm site will consist of 365 turbines over 40,000 acres. They will be powered by the Turkana Corridorwind, a low-level jet stream from the Indian Ocean.

The wind farm is part of Kenya’s goal of adding 5,000 MW of power on the national grid over the next three years. Kenya currently depends on fossil fuels and hydro.
