The Starlight Insurance Gala raises $243,500 to help grant children’s wishes

In its 23rd year of raising money to help children who are battling serious illnesses, the annual Starlight Insurance Gala produced a donation of $243,500 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada.

The “Run for the Roses” gala was hosted by Anwar Knight, a broadcaster with CTV Toronto, and held on May 6 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The formal affair was an opportunity for the P&C insurance industry to come together and raise money to help the Starlight Children’s Foundation fulfill its mandate of bringing fun into the lives of children who spend much of their time in hospitals.

One of the ways that the foundation brings fun into these children’s lives is through the granting of wishes. Children who are seriously ill or are facing life-altering injury can have wishes granted in one of four categories. A child may have an opportunity to meet his or her favourite celebrity; go on a Canadian travel adventure; select a gift; or have a dream-fulfilling experience such as being a ballerina or a firefighter for a day.

The P&C industry began holding its own fundraising gala for the charity in 1994. It has since donated more than $4 million to the Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada and fulfilled 1,000 wishes of children who benefit from the foundation.
